Quit Smoking – Find the Root Cause!

The only serious way for most people to quit smoking is to identify the root cause of their smoking habit. This is more often than not an emotional issue rather than a physical one.  Here are three ways to identify your own issue…

1. Think back to your first cigarette

Really dig deep into your memories and identify the exact specific time and place when you took your very first cigarette. Once you have identified the occasion when you started smoking, replay the events of that time from a few minutes before your first cigarette to a few minutes after. Ask yourself: what was happening, who were you with, why were cigarettes involved, and how did you come to smoke the first one. Analyse this event closely and you may discover the reason why you smoke.

2. Ask yourself what is making you smoke a cigarette right now

Next time you find your hand reaching for the cigarette packet, pause a moment and ask yourself just why are you having that smoke. Is it some form of stress that you feel a cigarette will help you with. Have you had a negative emotional reaction; a fight with your lover or a row with the kids, that is causing you to need a cigarette. Are your friends smoking around you and have offered you the packet. If you just hesitate and take a moment to reflect on why you are about to smoke, and I mean really think about the reason, you will often find that it isn’t because you want to smoke but that you are being pushed into it by someone or some circumstance. This may be your root cause: you are being coerced into smoking in various ways without really wanting to.

3. Assess your lifestyle

Peer pressure is a powerful force and something that most of us have to face everyday. Also, our daily routines take us into situations that we cannot fully control but are nonetheless necessary. Even our home environment, which we think is under our control, is often far from being controlled. Unruly children or spouses can create a home of chaos and stress. These are all part of our lifestyle; the way we are living our daily lives and can have a massive impact on why we smoke. Look closely at your lifestyle both in a broad sense: are you happy, are you following your chosen path, and in the mundane sense of daily chores. Identify which aspects of your lifestyle may be contributing to your smoking. Think about what triggers you to reach for the cigarettes and gradually you will be able to see where the connections are between your daily routines and your smoking habit. Once you have identifiable issues you can start to work on them to reduce your smoking.
