What is TMJ/TMD?
TMJ and TMD are abbreviations used to describe a variety of symptoms caused by problems in the joint that attaches the lower jaw to the skull, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Though many people use “TMJ” to mean pain or dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint, “TMJ” actually refers to the joint itself. Experts refer to Temporomandibular joint disorder (or dysfunction) as “TMD.” This group of symptoms is also referred to as MPD (myofascial pain dysfunction) and craniomandibular dysfunction.
Common Symptoms
One might assume that TMD would only affect the jaw or mouth. Indeed, TMD can cause damage to the teeth, gums, bones and joints. However, a wide range of symptoms may be caused by problems with the temporomandibular joint. These include:
- Headaches / Migraines
- Facial pain
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Tinnitus (Ringing in the ears)
- Sensitive and sore teeth
- Jaw pain
- Limited jaw movement or locking jaw
- Numbness in the fingers and arms
- Clicking or popping in the jaw joints
- Depression
Signs of TMD in children:
- Ear infections
- Leaning their head on an arm
- Lip, cheek, or finger biting, sucking or chewing
- Headaches
- Snoring, grinding teeth at night
- Significant chewing of gum.
Because some of these symptoms are also linked to other medical problems, patients and doctors may not immediately think of TMD as a possible cause. However, TMD is extremely common. Experts believe a majority of people have some degree of dysfunction in their temporomandibular joints.
Do I have TMD/TMJ?
If you experience any of the above symptoms on a regular basis, you may have TMD. You can ask your doctor about the possibility of TMD in you or your child. However, doctors and even dentists can miss a case of TMD or may not be aware that your symptoms are caused by dysfunction in your temporomandibular joints. Therefore, if your symptoms match those listed above, you may feel more comfortable contacting a trained neuromuscular dentist.
