Very beautiful! You never know what to expect from Shnittke.
Thank you very much!

Schnittke’s choir concerto is one of his most accessible pieces. There are a few recordings of it available but this one being performed with the Russian State Symphonic Capella under Polyansky is the best by far and away.
July 26th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Forgot to add that I think Schnittke dedicated this piece along with the piece “Three Sacred Hymns” to Polyansky.

Yes, this is the fourth movement. (The last and the most tonal movement.) Gorgeous piece. I grew up with the recording on Chandos. This recording sounds very polished but somewhat lower-energy (doesn’t push nearly as far with Schnittke’s louder dynamics / bigger-energy moments in this mvmt). Thanks for posting this!

grandiose, bouleversant et serein.

I am an avid fan of classical piano music, but this blew my mind. Apart from the concerto does Schnittke have many choir works? Can anyone direct me to some of the greater classical choir opuses out there! Thanks a lot.

‘Lacrimosa’ from Mozart’s Requiem
i don’t know much about choir music either but that is one of my favourites
and i think you should check out Ligeti’s ‘Lux Aeterna’. see what you think. give it a chance.
and this schnittke piece is incredible!!
May 6th, 2009 at 7:54 am
Check out Schnittke’s Requiem *14th movements. The 13th is Credo and it is in a Jazz/Rock style! Henryk Gorecki is another composer in similar style. By the way, Swedish Radio Choir and Eric Ericson is the best choir in the world
YEH!

Божественная музыка!!!!! Шнитке – Гений!!!!

There is no doubt that Schnittke was one of the most ingenious composers of the 20th century. Next month will be the 11th anniversary of his death, and as such I plan on listening to his Requiem in his memory, along with other works including this one.
Bravo, maestro. You are missed.

Schnittke’s later works are insanely beautiful and ingenious. He said himself that he did not write the music he wanted, but what he heard. “Through me, something outside myself becomes audible…”
Big words from a mama’s boy, but when listening to his work, I almost belive it. 12 psalms of repentance for mixed chorus is my favourite classical work of all time. Though not as accessible as this, the contrasts make it superior to this beautiful work imo.
August 5th, 2009 at 6:35 am
Schnittke also wrote a set of “Psalms of Repentance” which are very beautiful as well.
August 16th, 2009 at 5:53 am
That is absolutely amazing. Schnittke was a genius.

For Schnittke composer “should be a medium or a sensor remembering what he hears from somewhere else and whose mind acts as a translator only. Music comes from some sort of divine rather than human area.”
